Do I really need this?
I am not sure how many of you have heard of Margareta Magnusson, I for one hadn't a clue who she was and had never heard her name.....until recently that is.
Some months ago at one of the Hilary's Reading Group meeting a book entitled "The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning" was put forward for the group to read. It is not as gruesome as the title implies, basically it is the Swedish practice of "dostadning" or "death cleaning" - the ruthless disposal of your accumulated clutter, to spare your offspring or executors the chore after your demise. She actually went through the process of clearing clutter on five separate occasions, that was the spark for her radical approach to "death cleaning"
Sheila read the book with much interest and very quickly decided it was time for us to have a look at what we really could do without. This started what is now a weekly hour or so going through cupboards and the like. We actually started by clearing and are still clearing our "glory hole" (i.e. the space under the stairs if you know Forestdale houses). I was surprised by what we had accumulated but even more surprised at the ruthlessness needed to discard objects. Obviously some of very personal nature will be kept, but even these will be subject to discussion. I have been helped in this decision making by a comment passed to me some time ago by my brother, he works on the basis of "if it has not been used or worn in the last 12 months, it is of no need and can go". Alas, it has only partially worked as I cannot bring myself to say goodbye to my Rothmans Football Yearbooks from 1974 to 2002, and other sport annuals of even earlier vintage (some dating back to the 1930's).
So what prompted me to submit this piece, well on opening the newspaper this morning I came across her name in the obituaries she having passed away on the 12th March.
And in memory of her, Sheila and I will renew with more vigour and ruthlessness our "Dostadning", as we both prefer to be responsible for our own "decluttering".
