Instructions on Eating an Orange
1. Eating an orange is a social activity – you are encouraged to share with others. Make sure to have someone beside you to share with. If you do not have anyone to share it with, you may opt to do it alone; don't be discouraged as it only means there will be more for you!
2. Choose any type of orange – I prefer mandarins and clementines. Make sure it is ripe and ready for eating. Grasp it within your hands like you’re holding water and you don’t want it to slip through your fingers. Cup your hands around it like you’re in prayer.
3. Dig your thumbs into the soft rind on top. Put pressure and peel apart softly. Pause. Let its aroma spread and fill you. You do not need to rush the process. You are encouraged to take your time.
4. Softly and slowly, tear the remaining skin on the fruit. Savor the smell – close your eyes if you must. Eventually, its sweet aroma will fill the space you’re in, letting anyone who comes close to you know.
5. With the orange in hand, break apart a small section from the whole. Give one to the other/s with you.
6. Place a piece in your mouth. Break its skin with your teeth, and await the rush of sweet juices on your tongue. Let the taste coat your mouth. Continue eating until satisfied.
7. Do not be afraid of the mess. Expect the rind to plant itself underneath your nails. The smell will follow you around all day. Your hands will be sticky. There will be bits of oranges between your teeth. This will serve as a reminder of what you have eaten.
8. Eating an orange is holy. Let it be so.
