We must eat to live,” Joy Harjo wrote. But with other people, eating becomes not just an act of sustaining the body, but an act of nourishing it with love. It becomes more, love adding value to the action. Eating is one of the basic functions we need to survive. It has always been so, for as long as humans have existed. The story of human survival, then, is rooted in love.
Eating has everything to do with love. It’s a way for us to communicate our love for each other. Babies being fed by their parents (physical touch). Sweet messages on sticky notes for your packed lunch (words of affirmation). “Let’s eat together” (quality time). “I cooked your favorite” (acts of service). “I bought this drink because you said it’s your favorite” (receiving gifts).
Food provides our body with necessary nutrients and vitamins, but it also allows us to express our love. Actions speak louder than words, people say. With food, you can show love without saying anything at all.
Dear reader, I hope you are able to nourish your body with food and love. I hope you have people to sit around a table with. I hope you are happy and full.
