A LETTER FROM OUR EDITOR IN CHIEF
Traditionally, a 30th Anniversary called for pearls. In modern times, it’s become diamonds. Either way, both are beautiful in their own right.
Last year, it was said that Southville’s 30th Anniversary was meant to have more fanfare, and details were already being sketched out, unrefined. It was Southville’s diamond anniversary. From a small and humble preschool, it had grown into a complex of different campuses throughout the Philippines and abroad. Then the COVID-19 pandemic—as it did to a lot of things—put a stop to the celebration. Students and teachers were forced to P H O T O B Y M A R T I N R . S M I T H celebrate Southville’s 30th Anniversary online and alone, separated from the community the school was so proud of cultivating.
Or were they? Even online, it seemed that Southville managed to bring everyone together. Students, teachers, and friends managed to reach across screens and wires. Even apart, Monarchs still came together to laugh, to study, and to thrive with one another. Traditionally, a 30th Anniversary calls for pearls, but now it calls for diamonds. Whether or not you prefer sea or stone, pearls and diamonds are relatively the same. They’re precious things that come from almost nothing; tested and tempered by time to become something uniquely beautiful and brilliant.
The same can be said about our diverse and adaptable school with its talented students and diligent teachers. The 30th Anniversary of this beautiful community may have been stolen from us by the dread pandemic, but that won’t stop us from celebrating each other, our talents, and our achievements. The Mover is a platform for the students to be proud of who they are as Southville Monarchs. That’s because the students are the pearls and diamonds of Southville. They are the sediment the school has refined and challenged until they shone.
We are The Mover. Platform, pen, and paper. We wish you a fruitful quarantine and an amazing AY 2020-2021!
