Learning healthy ways to manage stress is another way of caring for the heart. That might mean exercise, spending time outdoors, talking with friends, practising relaxation techniques or simply allowing ourselves more time to switch off.
Importantly, practising heart care should not be driven by fear. It is about prevention, awareness and giving ourselves the best opportunity to remain healthy as we age. We cannot control every risk factor, but we can become active participants in our own health.
And it is worth remembering that heart health is rarely determined by one perfect meal, one workout or one health check. It is the cumulative effect of the choices we make over many years. Small habits, repeated regularly, can have a meaningful impact.
Perhaps we need to change the way we think about heart care altogether. Instead of waiting until something goes wrong, we should treat cardiovascular health as something worth protecting throughout our lives.
Encourage young children to be active. Teach them about nutrition and the dangers of smoking and vaping. Encourage teenagers and young adults to understand that their health choices matter now, not just decades from now. And as adults, led by example by making our own wellbeing a priority.
It has been working for you from the very beginning. Looking after it should begin early too. Your heart does not suddenly become important when you turn 50.
The small choices we make today can become an investment in the decades ahead.
When it comes to heart care, tomorrow is not the best time to begin. Today is.
