A NEW CHAPTER IN OBESITY CARE
OBESITY CARE IS CHANGING, WITH MORE TREATMENT OPTIONS AND A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMPLEX CONDITION THAN EVER BEFORE. AS DR JASON FREE TAKES ON THE ROLE OF PRESIDENT OF THE AUSTRALIAN & NEW ZEALAND METABOLIC OBESITY SURGICAL SOCIETY (ANZMOSS), HE LOOKS AT WHAT’S AHEAD FOR PATIENTS.
Obesity care has changed considerably over the past decade. Where conversations once centred largely around diet, exercise or surgery, today there is a much broader understanding of obesity as a complex, chronic health condition. Encouragingly, there is also a growing range of medical, surgical, nutritional and psychological approaches available to help manage it.
These changing approaches were among the many topics explored at the 2026 ANZMOSS Annual Conference, held in Hobart in August.
Bringing together surgeons, physicians, nurses, dietitians, psychologists, researchers and other health professionals working in obesity and metabolic care, the annual conference provides an opportunity to examine emerging research, evolving treatments and new approaches to long-term patient care.
For Dr Jason Free of Surgery Gold Coast, this year’s conference also marked an important professional milestone as he transitioned from President-Elect to President of ANZMOSS.
“It’s a privilege to take on the role of President of ANZMOSS. Medicine continues to evolve, and there is always something new to learn. Bringing people together to share knowledge, exchange ideas and continue improving obesity care ultimately benefits our patients,” says Dr Free.
One of the important conversations occurring within obesity medicine is the way both the condition and its treatment are understood.
While weight remains an important clinical measure, modern obesity care looks at the broader health picture, including metabolic health, mobility, sleep, nutrition, psychological wellbeing and the management of obesity-related conditions.
The ANZMOSS conference reflected this multidisciplinary approach, with discussions spanning bariatric and revisional surgery through to medical therapies, nutrition, behavioural health, weight stigma and long-term care. Emerging technologies including robotics, artificial intelligence, digital surgery and data-driven approaches were also explored.
For patients, however, progress does not simply mean having access to the newest procedure or technology. It means having a greater understanding of obesity and more options from which an appropriate, individual treatment pathway can be considered.
