PERIMENOPAUSE PLATE: HOW YOUR NUTRITIONAL NEEDS SHIFT IN YOUR 40S
THE SMARTEST SNACKS TO KEEP AT YOUR DESK
Snacking is something most of us do, particularly those who work in offices and keep looking for quick sources of energy to beat brainfog and afternoon slugs. Opting for snacks that don’t need refrigeration and that offer health benefits is your best option to maximise how you feel to help boost your energy and mood throughout the day.
Biltong is the best snack. It’s packed with protein and essential nutrients. It’s very satiating and low carb/ sugar which means it fills you up and doesn’t give you cravings. It contains highly bioavailable protein and good amount of the amino acid leucine for muscle building. Try and make sure it’s grass fed and grass finished, ideally also organic and doesn’t have added sugar or any artificial additives such as maltodextrin. Ideally it’s just meat and salt and some fresh herbs and spices if you like flavours.
Sardines are one of the most nutrient-dense snacks you can keep on hand. They’re packed with high-quality protein to support satiety and muscle health, while also providing Omega-3 fats, Vitamin D, selenium and calcium if the bones are included. I prefer sardines in glass jars rather than cans, as they avoid potential concerns around can linings and are often preserved in high-quality olive oil. They’re a convenient whole-food snack that delivers exceptional nutrition with minimal processing.

A small handful of mixed nuts provides healthy fats, protein and fibre to help keep hunger at bay between meals. They’re also rich in nutrients such as magnesium and zinc, which support energy production, recovery and overall health.
A quality collagen bar is a convenient way to increase your protein intake when you’re short on time. Unlike many snack bars that rely on refined grains and syrups, the Chief Collagen Bar combines protein, healthy fats and whole-food ingredients to help keep you satisfied between meals. The added collagen also supports connective tissue health, making it a practical option for active people looking to support their muscles, joints and overall recovery while avoiding highly processed snack foods. It’s the best replacement for candy and chocolate bars as it tastes delicious, but it’s low sugar/low carb, so it won’t give you cravings.
These are snacks that are OK to keep at the desk without refrigeration. If you do have a fridge, there are many other healthy options like Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, cheese, kefir, etc.
