FIELD NOTES

Attack, release, ratio and knee are four words for one question: how fast, and how much.
B Y 0 1
A fast attack flattens transients; a slow one lets them through and controls what follows. Drums usually want slow, vocals usually want fast, and the exceptions are where mixes get interesting.
Ratio sets how hard the compressor leans once the signal crosses the threshold. Below four to one it is shaping; above it, it is limiting, whatever the front panel calls it.
The number that matters is gain reduction. Two decibels on a vocal is often all it takes. If the meter is swinging past six, the fix is usually earlier in the chain.
