F R O M T H E S T U D I O WHY NINETY-NINE
A catalogue is a list. A magazine is an argument. This is both, and the argument comes first.
B Y F O R T H E S T U D I O Two thousand four hundred and ninety-nine titles.
That’s how much we sell.
We could tell you every one of them is essential. We won’t.
Nobody needs all of it. Nobody can hear all of it. And anyone who’s spent an afternoon comparing plug-ins instead of making music knows that more choice doesn’t always mean more progress.
So we did what we think a good shop should do.
We chose.
Ninety-nine products. Ranked. Considered. Defended.
Not necessarily the newest. Not necessarily the best known. The ones we’d put in front of someone whose work we care about, with the reasons right there on the page.
You might disagree with our number one. You might think number forty deserves to be number four.
Good.
The order is ours. The opinion is yours.
We would rather be wrong on the page than vague in a feed.
Beyond the ninety-nine is Supply: the complete catalogue, organised into eleven departments. A place to find exactly what you came for, and occasionally something you didn’t know existed.
Some products deserve a closer look. So we show them in use, not just in their packaging. Other pages leave the products behind altogether to talk about the craft.
Because even a software shop should know when to stop talking about software.
And yes, this is still a shop.
Every page is live. Tap a name, a price or a picture and you’ll find the product, its current price and the licence options the maker actually offers.
No manufactured scarcity. No unnecessary theatre.
The price is the price.
We’re a small room in Toronto. We test what we sell. We have favourites. We have opinions. And we’re prepared to put them on the page.
If something is in this book, someone here has used it on a session.
If it’s in the ninety-nine, we’d buy it again.
