  • Page 2On April 4, 2026, we had the opportunity to volunteer and take part in the Edmonton chap- ter's HKL Walk. It was a mean- ingful experience that reminded us how much small acts of kind- ness can impact people Our walk began at the Faculty Club at the University of Alber- ta and continued to the Legisla- ture Grounds. Along the way, we handed out flowers, spoke with community members, and shared HKL's message of com- passion, positivity, and equality. Even though handing someone a flower seemed simple, it made a real difference to many of the people we met.

  • Tao Te Ching: Humility Is PowerWhen we think of humility, we often picture someone who is meek, small in stature, sub- missive, or powerless. How- ever, true humility is far from weakness. It is a divine quality that carries the power to move mountains. Throughout his- tory, many great leaders have demonstrated the strength that comes from humility. Examples include Moses, David, and, in the 18th century, Bhai Bachit- tar Singh. One of the clearest demonstrations of humility's power can be found in some- thing we encounter every day: water. The supreme goodness is like water.

  • Page 7Reading The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak was a tru- ly profound and unexpected experience for me. At first, it seemed like just another novel, but it quickly became captivat- ing, and I couldn't put the book down. The reading experience felt meditative because of how peaceful and deeply reflective the writing was. The emotions, conversations, and struggles felt incredibly real, which made it more powerful and unforgetta- ble. The story follows Ella Ru- binstein, a woman who feels trapped and disconnected from her life, while also exploring the extraordinary bond between Rumi and Shams of Tabriz. I especially liked how relatable Ella's character was-her strug- gles, imperfections, and confu- sion felt human and authentic.

The Return to the Heart

Whenever we have noble or altruistic thoughts, we connect and exhibit the true nature of ourselves. Each noble thought brings inner happiness instantly. However, the opposite is also true: selfish, negative, or con- demning thoughts often lead to tension, anxiety, and worry.

God, and grows when shared with others through virtues such as humility, kindness, and love. Similarly, our truest self is also a sacred gift, meant to be nur- tured and expressed in ways that bring light and love to those around us. Love is what guides us beyond the illusion of false identity and leads us toward our truest self. When we begin to let go of ego and embrace humili- ty, the heart slowly opens, and only then can genuine love be- gin to emerge within us. The art of love is not revealed through pride, status, or self-importance, but through adorning ourselves with the precious jewels of hu- mility, compassion, and sincer- ity.

When consciousness becomes consumed by selfishness, aware- ness drifts away from the heart, producing a sharp mind that nevertheless lacks love. When we drift away from the heart, we become disconnected from our authentic nature. When we are free from worry, anxiety, and tension, and instead filled with joy, only then do we be- come not merely truly wealthy, but fully authentic as well. The peace and fulfillment we feel through beautiful thoughts, sincere intentions, and compas- sionate actions is happiness in its purest form. It is a gift from To be truly humble requires immense courage. It asks us to soften the ego, to release the constant need for recognition, and to see ourselves not above others, but connected to them.

Artistic Expression of HKL

For this drawing, I decided to create a depiction of a place I see as one of the holiest places in the world: The Golden Temple. This is a place that I am very familiar with and deeply associate with peace and love for humanity. Located in India, it holds incredible historical significance and serves as a place where people come together. The building itself is made of pure gold, and I wanted to reflect that by incorporating gold leaf into my work. The peace and softness pres- ent within this space are reflected through the use of soft colours and smooth blending.

For this sculpture, I created a ce- ramic lotus flower that holds three candles. I chose the lotus flower because, against all odds, it grows from the depths of muddy water and rises into something beautiful. To me, the lotus symbolizes living life with grace and HKL despite difficult circumstances. The can-

Humility is not weakness, it is instead a strength that allows the soul to grow. Each day, we must consciously soften the ego, walking the path of sincer- ity and selflessness as we grad- ually become more aligned with our truest nature. For it is only through deep humility and ego- lessness that one is able to enter the house of love. The journey toward humility is ultimately a journey back toward love itself as love slowly floods the heart the ego drowns.

dles in the centre represent the light within us that can be sparked by one another. We can help spread light into each other's lives and encourage one another to live with kindness, compassion, and humil- ity.

In today's world, we tend to focus on ourselves and our own lives, causing others to seem small or unimportant. We forget that oth- ers have their own struggles and may need extra kindness and love in their lives. Instead of focusing on how others treat us, we should turn inward and choose to meet the world with humility, kindness, and love.
