Stop Thinking, Start Living: Chandigarh’s Journey into the Present

Stop Thinking, Start Living:

Chandigarh’s Journey into the Present

CHANDIGARH, PUNJAB, INDIA

In a fast-paced world increasingly dominated by constant distraction, the Humility, Kindness, and Love (HKL) India team recently hosted a transformative “Tea Talk” session in Chandigarh, offering attendees an opportunity to pause, connect, and reflect.

Guided by the central theme, “We are not living; we are always thinking,” the gathering explored the delicate balance between experiencing the present moment and the human tendency to overanalyze. Brought together by Divine grace, the event reflected HKL’s core message of cultivating Humility, Kindness, and Love in our daily lives.

One of the most beautiful aspects of this Tea Talk was the live singing accompanied by the rabab, a traditional string instrument. The soulful sound of the rabab, paired with devotional singing, created an atmosphere of warmth, stillness, and connection. Rather than simply listening to music, participants were invited to experience it, to let the melodies quiet the mind and gently bring awareness back to the present moment.

Through collective singing, guided meditation, and fellowship, attendees were encouraged to move from constant thinking into simply being.

The session welcomed approximately 60 individuals who traveled from across the region to attend. Participants journeyed from various cities, including Chandigarh, Ambala, Chamkaur Sahib, and Jalandhar to share a unified space of peace.

Following the meditation and group activities, the HKL India organizing team spent time connecting with attendees. These one-on-one conversations offered an opportunity to hear personal reflections and learn how the message of the session resonated with each person. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees expressed deep joy at being part of such a spiritually enriching gathering and shared their enthusiasm for coming together again in the near future.

The Chandigarh Tea Talk served as a gentle reminder that beneath the noise of our thoughts, there is a place within us where we can simply be, connect, and experience the beauty of the present moment. In that stillness, we may find the space for inner transformation.

A Walk on the Kind Side

This weekend, the HKL Calgary Chapter took the message of Humility, Kindness, and Love beyond the walls of a gathering and into the streets, parks, and pathways of our community through three beautiful walks.

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA

The first began at Chestermere City Hall, winding along the lake as volunteers connected with boaters, families, and passersby. Flowers were shared as small tokens of love, and the smiles that followed were unforgettable. One couple was so touched by the gesture that they held their flowers proud ly outside their car, honking in support as the HKL walk passed by. A simple flower became a moment of connection between strangers.

The second walk joined the Stronger Together 5K, where HKL volunteers encouraged participants along the route, offering water, motivation, and plenty of positive energy at the checkpoints. It was a beautiful expression of selfless service, reminding participants that sometimes kindness is simply being there to lift someone up when they need it.

The weekend concluded with a peaceful evening walk through Glenmore Park, where volunteers once again shared flowers, smiles, and the message of HKL with those they encountered.

The One She Was Longing For Who will understand the ache of a heart separated from its True Self? Who will understand the agonizing pain that this consciousness is plagued with?

The One She Was Longing For Who will understand the ache of a heart separated from its True Self?

Who will understand the agonizing pain that this consciousness is plagued with?

Who will understand a longing that has no language, a thirst that remains even after everything the world has to offer has been placed in her hands? She has tried to explain it. But how does she explain a homesickness for a place she cannot remember? How does she tell someone that she is longing for someone she cannot name?

So she searches. She looks into the eyes of others, hoping to find recognition, hoping some one will see what she cannot say. Hoping someone will understand the strange emptiness that follows her even on the days when everything seems fine. But no one comes. But in Truth no one can. Because deep inside there is a sanctuary only reserved for someone special.

And one day, she begins to understand she has been asking the outside world to answer a question that can only be answered within. The realization hurts. But it also frees her. Because if no one outside of her can give her what she is longing for, then what she is longing for was never outside of her to begin with.

As this Truth sets her free, she asks herself: Who am I? From where did I come? Who is the One I have been longing to meet? What is the True Self within me that I have forgotten? She finally knows where she must begin. Closing her eyes, she turns inward to sit with herself.

Oh, my Beloved, grant me the blessed vision to recognize my True Self.

The mind protests. It gives her reasons to leave. It reminds her of tomorrow, of yesterday, of everything that still needs to be done. But she remains. She gently tells her restless mind, “Today, I will not follow you. Today, I will sit with my heart.” For once, she does not abandon herself when the silence becomes uncomfortable. She stays with the ache. She lets it breathe. She lets it be there without trying to fix it.

And slowly something shifts. The noise begins to quiet— thought by thought, layer by layer—until beneath the turbulence, she finds what has been there all along. A silence. Not an empty silence, a living one. A silence that knows her. She remains entirely still, simply listening.

And in that quiet, she feels Her. The Divine Beloved, stepping forward from the chambers of her heart. A warmth in the center, a softness in the breath, and a Presence so ancient and close that an inner voice whispers, I know You. Instantly, the tears arrive. Not from sorrow, but from a profound remembrance, as the soul wakes up to a Love it never truly lost.

The more she becomes still, the more she feels the Divine. Love begins to unveil itself. She feels Her presence like a tender warmth blooming within the heart, infinite and gentle. She feels Her presence rising within her head, quieting the endless movement of thought, filling the space within her with a stillness deeper than words. She feels it within her navel, deep in the center of her being, as though an ancient remembrance is awakening within her. Wherever she turns her gaze within, the illusion of distance vanishes, everywhere she looks, there is the Beloved.

The Divine Presence grows. And the more she attends to Her, the more She reveals Herself.

She stays there, resting in Her. For the first time, she has no need to explain herself, to be understood, or to be held by another. She is cradled by a Love that asks nothing, a Love that has witnessed every version of her: the beautiful, the broken, the frightened, the searching, and the hidden corners she kept from herself. This is the One who saw every swallowed tear, every unfinished prayer, every lonely night wondering why her heart felt so far from Home. The One who stayed even when she forgot.

And in that quiet knowing, another Truth unfolds, she was never alone, never abandoned, never truly lost. She had simply been looking outward. All those years spent searching to be understood had come to an end. Not meeting someone who completes her, but meeting the One who was never separate from her. The One within. The One who knows. The One who sees. The One who loves without condition. She had been there in every breath, in every silence, in every solitary hour. Her True Self had been walking beside her, lovingly witnessing, patiently waiting, calling her back to herself.

The urge to run has vanished, replaced by a desire to stay. She asks only to be drawn deeper into the living heart of the Divine, returning endlessly to that inner sanctuary. She realizes now the True Self was never far away, the distance lived only in her forgetting.

Each time she delves within, the veil grows thinner. When she is still enough to listen, she hears the heartbeat of her Beloved; when she is quiet enough to see, she finds Her face; when she surrenders, she is held by a love without bounds. Home was never out there in the world to be discovered. Her True Self is her Home, and the One she sought has been dwelling in the deepest chamber of her heart the entire time.

Now, with every turning inward, she meets Her more deeply. She comes to know Her, to walk in sweet intimacy with Divine Presence. Yet, knowing there are endless oceans left to explore within, she returns again and again, in silence, in prayer, in stillness, diving deeper into the core of her Being, until the seeker and the Sought merge, and there is only Her.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA SIX WALKS, ONE MESSAGE

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

SIX WALKS, ONE MESSAGE

The HKL movement continued to spread across Sydney through a series of six HKL Walks held in different parts of the city. Each walk brought volunteers together with a shared purpose: to spread Humility, Kindness, and Love, connect with new people, and introduce the wider community to the HKL movement.

The first walk took place at Nurragingy Reserve on 27 September, marking the beginning of the Sydney HKL Walks. Surrounded by nature and families enjoying the reserve, volunteers met members of the public, introduced them to HKL, and shared the message behind the movement.

Kindness

Cards were also handed out, encouraging people to carry out simple acts of kindness and pass that kindness on to others.

The movement then reached the heart of Sydney at Martin Place on 3 October, where volunteers handed out roses to members of the public. Each rose offered a simple yet meaningful way to share the message of HKL and create a moment of connection. Volunteers spoke with people from different backgrounds about the movement and the importance of bringing Humility, Kindness, and Love into everyday life.

During the walk, volunteers also met street rapper Allurn, who performed a rap dedicated to HKL. His performance brought an unexpected and memorable moment to the day, sharing the message of Humility, Kindness, and Love in a creative way. Whether through offering a rose, starting a conversation or sharing music, these small interactions showed how kindness can brighten someone’s day and leave a lasting impression.

From Martin Place, volunteers continued through Hyde Park on 3 October. The peaceful surroundings offered a different atmosphere from the busy city streets, while still providing many opportunities to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Volunteers handed out Kindness Cards, spoke about HKL, and continued introducing the movement to those they met along the way.

On 4 October, the HKL Walks moved to Parramatta Square, where volunteers connected with the local community in the busy centre of Parramatta. As people passed through the square, volunteers introduced them to HKL and shared the values at the heart of the movement. Each conversation offered an opportunity to encourage others to consider how Humility, Kindness, and Love can become part of their everyday interactions.

Later that day, the walk continued along the Parramatta River. As volunteers walked along the river, they met new people, handed out Kindness Cards and continued conversations about HKL. The walk provided another opportunity to put the movement’s values into action through genuine connection and simple acts of kindness.

The final walk of the Sydney se ries took place at Bondi Beach on 5 October. With people from many different places gathered at the beach, Bondi provided a fitting location to bring the six walks to a close. Volunteers handed out yellow flowers to members of the public, offering another simple gesture of kind-

ness and a way to begin conversations.

The Sydney Surf Crew also joined the walk to take photos, capturing the energy and spirit of the HKL movement at Bondi Beach. Volunteers continued meeting members of the public, sharing Kindness Cards and introducing people to HKL, bringing the Sydney series to a meaningful close.

Across all six walks, the focus went beyond simply gathering sign-ups. The greater purpose was to spread awareness of the HKL movement, share its message, and connect with more beautiful souls. A rose at Martin Place, a rap dedicated to HKL, a Kindness Card passed to a stranger, a yellow flower at Bondi Beach or simply a meaningful conversation all became opportunities to put Humility, Kindness, and Love into action.

The Choice That Changes Everything

Every story carries a precious and valuable lesson.

There is a story about a man who, after he dies, finds him self standing before St. Peter. St. Peter looks at the account of his life and decides that the man must go to hell. However, because he had also done some noble deeds, he is given the opportunity to spend a few moments in heaven as well.

First, St. Peter takes him to hell.

There, the man sees a long table beautifully decorated with delicious, nourishing food. Yet everyone sitting around the table is starving to death.

The man is puzzled and asks St. Peter, “Why aren’t they eat ing?”

St. Peter explains, “They have been given four-foot-long forks. They can reach the food, but the forks are so long that they cannot bring the food to their own mouths.”

The man understands and says, “Okay.”

Then St. Peter says, “Let me show you heaven. You are going to spend eight minutes there.”

When they arrive in heaven, the man is surprised to see the exact same table, the same beautiful food. But this time, they have eaten, are enjoying the meal together and fully satisfied and jolly.

The man turns to St. Peter and asks, “They must have been given smaller forks here.”

St. Peter smiles and says, “No. They have the same four-footlong forks.”

“Then how did they feed themselves?”

“They fed one another,” St. Peter replies.

They knew the secret of life: that if you do something good for somebody, nature replies to you in the same way. They were not thinking only of themselves. Each person was using their long fork to feed someone sitting across the table, and in doing so, everyone was fed.

When we share what we have with others, there is enough for everyone.

The story reminds us that heav-

en and hell are not necessarily different places, but can be created by the way we choose to live with one another. The surroundings are the same, yet the experience is completely different. In hell, people are consumed by their own hunger and think only of themselves, leaving everyone to suffer. In heaven, people recognize that they are connected and use what they have to care for one another. By feeding others, they too are fed. When we move beyond selfishness and learn to share, cooperate, and look after one another, we create heaven wherever we are.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji reminds us of the importance of sharing what we have and putting every gift, every boon we have received, in the service of humanity. A gift we have been blessed with becomes even more beautiful when it is shared.

FRESNO, CALIFORNIA, USA

On Saturday, September 26th, Fresno HKL volunteers traveled to Ventura, California, to participate in a Peace Walk centered around spreading love, kindness, and positivity throughout the community.

Before the walk began, we split into pairs and started walking around the area, giving out free flowers and Kindness cards to everyone we met. We also invited people to join the Peace Walk, which was starting in just 10 minutes.

One remarkable moment was when we met an older woman who was deaf and did not speak English. Thankfully, one of our volunteers knew ASL and was able to communicate with her and explain what the kindness card said. The woman was so happy and surprised that someone was able to communicate with her in her own language. Seeing her reaction made the moment feel even more meaningful because it reminded me that kindness does not have to be spoken. It can reach people in so many different ways.

When we invited her and the people around her to join the Peace Walk, they did not hesitate. They immediately said yes and were so open and excited to participate. The energy was incredible. You could truly feel the love and positivity throughout the area.

Even people who were unable to join, such as those who were fishing and needed to stay with their belongings, seemed like they wanted to be part of it. People walking their dogs were also quick to join us. The walk felt so welcoming and inviting that people naturally wanted to be a part of it.

What stood out to us most was how it felt like love was everywhere. Everywhere we looked, there were people smiling, con- HKL Volunteer necting, walking together, and spreading kindness. There was something so beautiful about

Experience seeing people from all different backgrounds come together for one simple purpose: to spread love.

For us, that is what HKL is all about. Sometimes a flower, a Kindness card, a simple invitation, or even a moment of connection can make someone feel seen and cared for. Watching everyone come together and walk side by side reminded me that when we create spaces rooted in love and kindness, people naturally want to be a part of them.

The HKL Walks in Los Angeles and Santa Monica took place at two of California’s most iconic locations — the Griffith Observatory and Santa Monica Pier. While each walk carried its own distinct atmosphere, both shared the same purpose: awakening Humility, Kindness, and Love in every human heart.

At Griffith Observatory, the day unfolded with an extraordinary sense of alignment.

The volunteers arrived without having to pay for parking and unexpectedly found themselves positioned directly in front of the Observatory. They were then given permission to carry the walk around the landmark itself, with the Hollywood Sign stretching across the hills behind them.

volunteers involved and for the attendees they encountered.

A group of three attendees approached members of the HKL team and respectfully asked one of the volunteers if he was Muslim. He shared that he came from the Sikh faith and explained that what they were witnessing extended beyond any one religion, faith, or political belief.

As the conversation continued, one of the young men turned to the volunteer and asked:

What made the experience so powerful was how naturally everything else disappeared in that moment. No one was thinking about who was Sikh, Christian, Muslim, or where anyone came from. Those distinctions simply weren’t there. A young man had opened his heart and asked another human being to pray for him, and everyone came together in prayer.

Just moments earlier, they had been complete strangers.

  • “Could you do me a favor?”
  • “Sure, what is it?” he replied.
  • “Could you pray for me?”

The sincerity of the request immediately made the moment deeply personal.

When asked what he would like the prayer to be for, the young man shared that, as he approached adulthood, he wanted to be free from the distractions around him and reconnect more deeply with the Divine.

In that moment, the volunteer turned inward toward Guru Nanak Sahib Maharaj Ji with one thought:

“This is the true HKL. This is what You were talking about. This is it.”

And there, in the middle of Santa Monica, people who had never met before gathered together

For the volunteers, it became one of those experiences that stays with you. They had come to Los Angeles and Santa Monica with the purpose of carrying the message of HKL from one soul to the next. And in this simple, unexpected interaction, they witnessed that message come alive before their own eyes.

There was nothing staged or planned about it. It was simply a moment of genuine human connection — one that reminded everyone involved how quickly the things that seem to divide us can disappear when one human heart sincerely opens to another.

For that moment, there were no differences between them.

  • There was simply oneness.

  • RECIPE:
  • Agar-Agar Panna Cotta

Easy • Eggless • Vegetarian • Serves 4

Ingredients

500 ml heavy cream 60 g sugar (about ¼ cup) 1 tsp agar-agar powder (about 2–3 g) 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

1. Mix the agar-agar powder with the sugar in a small bowl. This helps prevent lumps from forming.

2. Add the cream and the sugar and agar-agar mixture into a saucepan. Stir well.

3. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly. Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 1–2 minutes so the agar-agar fully activates.

4. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

5. Pour into 4 small glasses or ramekins.

6. Let cool for a few minutes, then refrigerate for about 2–3 hours until set.

7. Serve chilled with fresh berries, mango, or fruit sauce.

Tip: Agar-agar sets more firmly than gelatin. If you prefer a softer panna cotta, use slightly less agar-agar.
