  • WHEN OVERTHINKING BECOMES TOO MUCHThe reason overthinking and in- trusive thoughts drain your ener- gy is because no one explained the language of the brain. The brain doesn't understand what you like or don't like. It only understands what you en- gage with. So when you react to thoughts "I don't like these thoughts, they're so mean, they hurt me, why do they keep com- ing?" the brain doesn't register that you dislike them. It only sees that you're engaging. To the brain, it's like you're play- ing with those thoughts, so it assumes you enjoy them.

Recent- ly, I have found a deep sense of meaning in learning more about her remarkable journey. Mother Teresa devoted her life to serving others selflessly, she saw the light in everyone. She didn't wait for recognition or applause; she quietly gave ev- erything she could to help others. She was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje (now North Macedonia) as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Mother Teresa was devoutly raised Albanian who felt a religious calling at age 12.

  • A HUGE SUCCESS

THE HKL TORCH IS OFF TO CANADA

In the lead-up to the 6th Interna- tional HKL Conference, held on Saturday, April 11 at the Telford International Centre, the United Kingdom (UK) volunteer team carried out a wide range of out- reach initiatives to invite and engage the community.

By attending wellbeing events and connecting with mindful- ness organizations, volunteers built genuine relationships that contributed to a vibrant and diverse conference. These ef- forts helped bring together stall holders, attendees, and special guests, creating a dynamic ex- perience on the day.

Door-to-door outreach across the Telford area was met with a warm response. Many local residents took the time to speak with volunteers, ask questions, and learn more about the con- ference, with several going on to secure tickets not only for themselves but also for their family and friends.

One of the most memorable highlights of the outreach cam- paign was the HKL volunteers' visit to London. The HKL bus became a focal point near land- marks such as Big Ben, Tower Bridge, and Trafalgar Square. The London takeover drew in a diverse crowd, with people stopping to engage with volun- teers, take photos, and connect on social media.

The Shrewsbury community also showed strong support. The Shrewsbury Farmer's Mar- ket generously offered space for promotion, allowing volunteers to engage directly with visitors throughout the day. One orga- nizer shared, "We could use more initiatives trying to make a positive difference in the world, and we try to help spread this uplifting message as much as we can," a sentiment shared by many who stopped by.

In both Shrewsbury and Telford, week-long park stalls in the days leading up to the confer- ence created consistent opportu- nities for volunteers to connect with the local community. Their presence helped build familiar- ity and gave people the chance to better understand HKL's mis- sion and its positive impact.

Billboards across Telford further amplified awareness throughout the month. Many residents rec- ognized HKL through adver- tisements, workplace conver- sations, door-to-door outreach, and social media posts from special guests Frank Bruno and Joe Egan.

Another key milestone came with a feature on BBC Radio West Midlands. HKL Board Member Richard Good and vol- unteer Aman Kaur spoke about the organization and the con- ference, helping to extend its reach to a wider audience. The interview was replayed across the surrounding areas, building excitement and anticipation in the days before the conference. In the final week, international volunteers joined the UK team, bringing a strong sense of uni- ty. Their presence added to the momentum as everyone came together.

The 6th International HKL Conference ultimately stood as a reflection of collective effort, community spirit, and a shared vision for kindness, humility, and love. The conference saw strong attendance and engage- ment throughout the day, with attendees leaving inspired by the conversations and experi- ences they had been part of.

In our next issue, we will showcase the conference, capturing these moments in greater detail.

The university newspaper, The Cascade, is also preparing a feature on the club's work, and the coordinator of the week- ly student newsletter shared heartfelt support and plans to highlight HKL's story as well. The Human Rights Market co- ordinator offered ongoing sup- port through the student union, another encouraging sign that HKL's message is being heard and embraced.

From the start, their table be- came more than just a table; it became a space for real connec- tion. HKL members spoke with students from different back- grounds, with conversations centered around compassion, empathy, and a shared desire to make a difference. Through in- teractive games and a welcom- ing setup, visitors were able to learn about HKL's mission in a way that felt engaging and ap- proachable.

@nkl. toronto

February 14th, 2026 answers became more personal. One person said love is when someone becomes such a part of you that if they were to leave, it would feel like losing a piece of yourself. For others, love meant family. For many, it simply meant their mother.

Overall, the day showed what can happen when people come together with kindness as the focus. It was filled with con- nection, encouragement, hope, and a reminder that even small moments of care can spark something meaningful within a community.

At the heart of Union Station, where thousands pass through each day on their way to work, back home, between cities, or simply in search of a good meal, this Valentine's Day felt a little different.

One of the most memorable parts of the day was the kind- ness cards. Students were drawn to them, often pausing to read, reflect, and take those messages with them. Some even returned to share the experience with their friends. It really showed how even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact.

Not everyone had an answer right away. Some paused and took time to think. Others, rush- ing to catch their trains, smiled at the question and commented on how thoughtful it was be- fore moving on. A few admitted that love is something they feel deeply but struggle to put into words.

Amid the usual rush, vol- unteers from HKL gathered with a simple but powerful question: What does love mean to you?

As the day began, volunteers approached commuters and invited them to pause for a moment and reflect. Between conversations, they handed out Candygrams and boxes of choc- olates, adding small moments of sweetness to otherwise busy routines.

By the end of the day, one thing became clear to the volunteers. Despite differences in back- ground, pace of life, and per- sonal experiences, the language of love is something everyone understands.

The responses came in steadi- ly, and no two were the same. Some people described love as friendship. Others spoke about feeling safe and secure. A few shared that love means giving without expecting anything in In a place defined by movement and constant change, this Valen- tine's Day became a moment of connection. It was a reminder that even in the busiest spaces, kindness and love can still bring people together.

The Fresno community was welcomed to the HKL move- ment and the idea of walking around town to spread it. For instance, participants walked through the streets, people re- sponded to the banners with smiles and waves, creating a joyous environment. Some even said they enjoyed the "good vibes" and that it "brought happiness to my heart," show- casing the impact it had on the Fresno community.

All in all, everyone in the Tow- er District and Woodward Park area loved the message being spread in the HKL Walks, and some even joined along to fin- ish the walk with us or stayed for the music/meditation at the end. One of the people wrote her ex- perience of what she felt as this event took place;

The HKL walk was not just a walk for me, but a heart-to-heart connection. When flowers and cards were handed out to every- one, it felt as if the flower was actually a piece of my heart. We were offering this small, heart- felt flower to everyone we came in contact with. The atmosphere was filled with immense joy that even I couldn't pinpoint exactly what these feelings were. The joy felt like we were all floating in the air, with feelings of open- ness and laughter. We also began to notice everyone's eyes were shining as we exchanged humil- ity, kindness, and love with each other, be it through words or just smiles on our faces. Everyone's faces seemed to have a glow to them as if transformed by these feelings of HKL. Overall, it was such a blessed and magical day, and we felt like this walk touched many hearts along the way. Describing this experience feels short, but it was an expe- rience that was something to remember.

OF PLAC

We ended the evening with a small yet powerful meditation where everyone focused within and repeated these words:

"We are humility, We are kind- ness, We are love."

The silence after this medita- tion was profound; the silence of those moments was felt so deeply. The whole atmosphere had an air of peace surrounding us. The focus was there in that moment, and we couldn't hear the cars passing by or the chil- dren playing in the background. When the time came to depart, many left with gratitude. It felt like a blessing to just experi- ence and to be part of the HKL movement. A experience that felt so much bigger than the lit-

ON LOVE

As we wake up, we slowly start feeling love in our heart area for everyone. That is what this HKL movement is all about, recognizing and realiz- ing our potential and our true selves: humility, kindness, and love. HKL is about working on ourselves; once we become peaceful, only then will there be peace in the world.

A beggar was sitting as some- one was passing by. The pass- erby stopped and asked him, "What do kindness and love mean to you?"

Because he was a beggar, he replied, "Sir, I am very hun- gry; if I could just have a piece of bread."

The man went to a nearby bak- ery and brought back bread with jam on it.

We can shout loudly that there should be no wars, but we can was sung at this gathering was another original by Paul Bar- ton called, "Know them in Re- turn," and it goes like so:

The Fiercely OK song circles continue to take place Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings at the Kingston Community House at 99 York St. Many of the group members had birthdays that just passed or were right around the corner. To celebrate, the group sang a unique and beautiful birthday song called, "Another Trip Around the Sun" written by Heidi Wilson:

The Big Trees Know us The Little Trees Know us The Creeks and the Rivers too, The least we good-hearted people could do Is know them, in return

This song came about after Paul's heartfelt conversa- tion with an Indigenous elder who spoke of the sacred bond that human beings share with nature. Paul was inspired to write something that would allow for the singer and the listener to experience that deep connection. The song is a fill-in-the-blank song and the word know was replaced by love, hug, and call, in every iteration of the song.

On the day that you were born, 000 000 000

You were not the only one 000 000 000

Bugs and birds and bees emerging too

But you're the only one who sings like you

So sing sing on another trip around the sun

The beggar, who must have been somewhat awake, said, "The bread which you gave me is kindness, and the jam which you put on it is love."

Would those people listen to that voice? No. The wars will remain until we change. The outside is just a reflection of our inside."

"Whatever we do everyday, we must make sure that our heart is in it. In the heart, love should be there. Kindness can exist without love, but that kindness is light. Once love is there, however, it transforms the act. We cook, but if the cooking is done lovingly, that is both kindness and love. As we start waking up, you will feel pure love within you.

Downtown Calgary felt differ- ent that day.

The Global HKL Walk arrived with heart and purpose as 80 to 100 volunteers and approx- imately 400 to 450 attendees gathered at the iconic Peace Bridge in Calgary to begin the procession. From the very first step, it was clear this was more than a walk. It was a move- ment. How powerful to think that across 70+ HKL chapters worldwide, love was being spread this weekend. So many hearts touched, creating beauti- ful ripples of connection felt all around the globe.

As the group made its way through the city core, the uni- fied rhythm of footsteps car- ried HKL through downtown. Music filled the air. Laughter flowed easily. The energy was vibrant, yet deeply intentional.

Along the way, volunteers warmly invited passing pedes- trians to join the walk. Some paused curiously. Others smiled and stepped in for a few blocks.

THE ROSE OF HKL: NURTURING THE HEART'S INNER GARDEN

THE ROSE OF HKL:

NURTURING THE HEART'S INNER GARDEN

I used to look for peace in the world around me, waiting for the right circumstances to feel whole. Yet, I didn't realize I was standing in a garden that had been waiting for me to ar- rive for lifetimes. Through the movement of Humility, Kind- ness, and Love (HKL), I dis- covered that true beauty isn't found, it is mirrored from the Divine light pulsating within my very being.

Ever since I have been in- volved with the global move- ment of HKL, I have found myself reflecting deeply on the essence of these virtues and how I can truly embody them. Often times during med- itation, I visualize these words floating before me, entering my very being. As I focus on humility, kindness, and love I feel their presence in my heart and melt deeper and deeper into contemplation. As I let these words enter my heart center, I feel a flower ready to sprout and blossom. "Is this it?" I wonder. Is this the flower of HKL that has always been see it. Even with my eyes open, I feel this flower of HKL pulsating within, radiating its tender and holy fragrance. The subtleness of the flower leaves a trail wherever I am, connect- ing me to the very Source of Life itself.

within me not outside, but within waiting to be nurtured, tended to, and given attention and care? My heart whispers sweetly, "These virtues are you, your True Self."

As I feel this flower, it feels as if its petals are beginning to lovingly open. My attention is the water, soil, and nour- ishment this rose has always needed to be seen and flour- ish forth. I wonder, "Has this flower of HKL always been here?" Yes, always. A reali- zation strikes me powerfully that beyond these labels of my name, my relations, my occu- pation, who I am is truly so beautiful. If all this is stripped away what remains are His countless virtues; who I truly am is a Divine being of infinite love and light my True beauty.

This flower unveils a profound secret: the more connected I am to my inner world, the more beautiful and loving the outer world is. Humility, kindness, and love exist in all hearts; they are the rhythm of the soul. When I stay with this rhythm, everything is beauti- ful. My inner world is full of pure bliss and an indescribable stillness through which my soul operates. The more in- tently I stay connected to my inner flower with conscious presence, the more peaceful I feel. Life becomes a celebra- tion a gift from the Divine. I see His beauty reflected back to me through every interac- tion I have, and every word I speak, aware that I represent my Divine Beloved. All life is a reflection of my interior, As I emerge from meditation, I can feel the lingering fra- grance of this flowering rose. To my surprise, the flower didn't go away it came to life! Perhaps it was always there, yet I didn't have the eyes to

and the outside is a mirror of my inner landscape. If I wish for the world to be kind and loving, it must begin with my inner journey.

Ultimately, this flower illumi- nates a sacred truth: these vir- tues are not something I need to 'become.' They are who I am. I am humility, I am kind- ness, I am love.

Now, with folded hands and head bowed in reverence, a heartfelt prayer for all human- ity is sent out.

"May the rose of humility, kindness, and love blossom in all hearts, and may its fra- grance make the world peace- ful and a loving world in which we all laugh, smile, and truly celebrate life together as One family of the Divine."

WHEN OVERTHINKING BECOMES TOO MUCH

The reason overthinking and in- trusive thoughts drain your ener- gy is because no one explained the language of the brain.

The reason overthinking and in- trusive thoughts drain your ener- gy is because no one explained the language of the brain.

Paradoxically, trying to fix your emotions and thoughts tells your brain, "They like fixing this." In order to keep you doing what it thinks you enjoy, it gives you more intense emotions and thoughts.

You have to understand that you created your own thought algorithm, just like a social me- dia feed. Even if you don't like something like clown videos showing the brain that you're engaged with them. The brain then assumes you care about fixing these thoughts. Label- ing thoughts as "negative" still gives them meaning and atten- tion.

We don't want to stay on the battlefield of thoughts and emo- tions. We want to step off that field. So ask yourself, "What field am I playing on?"

Shift to the field of valued ac- tions, growing your life and focusing on what matters, mo- ment by moment. This means but you keep reacting to them, they will keep showing up.

being present in the Now. Med- itation is one of the best ways to stay in the present moment.

Social media algorithms don't care if you like something or not. They only track attention. The more attention you give, the more they show it. Your brain works in a similar way. It builds an automatic pattern of thoughts that can feel like it's attacking you. So when you wake up, intrusive thoughts are already there, and it feels out of your control. But don't blame your brain, it's doing its job based on what it has learned.

At first, it will feel challeng- ing. The brain will resist: "No, we like fixing thoughts here are some more thoughts." You have to be willing to say, "I can feel uncomfortable and still be able to move forward with what matters."

Staying present each moment, you show your brain that those patterns no longer matter. Af- ter some time the brain begins to change but this is a practice. You built this pattern overtime, and it gained momentum which won't disappear overnight.

Now your job is to change the algorithm.

You've learned that the brain's language is engagement. To change the output, you must change what you engage with. The signal you give your brain comes from your focus, what you spend time and energy on.

It's like social media again, if you start watching flower vid- eos, clown videos may still ap- pear. The system needs time to adjust. Or like a fire: even if you stop adding wood, it will keep burning for a while before it fades.

Instead of trying to fix or fight thoughts even trying to make them positive you're still So don't measure success

while you're still practicing. If thoughts are still coming, it doesn't mean failure. But if you keep checking for them "Are they still there?" you're still en- gaging. That checking becomes a habit, and the brain reads it as interest.

The brain doesn't know any bet- ter it only knows you're paying attention.

That's why change requires dis- comfort. The brain tries to pull you away from discomfort by pushing you to "fix" thoughts for relief. This is similar to ad- diction. When someone is ad- dicted, withdrawal creates dis- comfort, pushing them to seek relief.

In your case, it's a thought habit. And like any habit, change hap- pens when you allow the dis- comfort without reacting to it.

You have to understand that what you're dealing with is like an addiction to thinking pat- terns. Overthinking and intru- sive thoughts can hold you back from living freely.

Imagine what life could feel like without constantly being stuck in your head.

Things began to change when I realized that staying in the pres- ent gave me more freedom than being tied to my thoughts.

Small changes matter. Your habits, actions, and focus shape who you become. We don't al- ways notice this when life feels easy, but during challenges, our thoughts can either bring us down or lift us up.

So be kind to yourself, and build strength. There is more to life than living in your head.

Growing up, I often heard about Mother Teresa and her embodiment of HKL. Her love for all from the rich to the "poorest of the poor”.

In 1943, the Bengali population was facing severe poverty and famine, which deeply disturbed her. On Sep- tember 10, 1946, during a train ride, she experienced a divine calling to leave the Lo- reto Convent and live among the poor and she followed that calling. In 1948, Mother Tere- sa officially left the Convent to pursue her calling.

citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world,"

In 1919, when Mother Teresa was just eight years old, her father, Nikollë Bojaxhiu, died suddenly, possibly as a result of intentional poisoning. The murder of her father changed her life drastically. It led to se- rious financial struggles for her family. These struggles later shaped her decision to devote her life to helping the poor.

At 18, she left home to join the Sisters of Loreto, traveling first to Ireland to learn English before continuing to Calcutta, India, where she would dedi- cate her life to helping those in In 1950, she established her own congregation called the “Missionaries of Charity". This congregation focused on pro- viding support and dignity to the poor and unwanted. Later in her life she established many beautiful foundations, need.

Mother Teresa arrived in Calmore

such as Nirmal Hriday (Ka- lighat Home for the Dying), and Shanti Nagar (Leprosy re- habilitation center).

Until her very last breath, Mother Teresa devoted her life to caring for strangers and chil- dren in need. She often placed herself at risk, entering danger- ous areas to offer aid and relief to the injured. She carried the virtues of humility, kindness, and love with every step she took toward a better future. Not every act was grand. She expressed her care through simple gestures, offering med- icine, food, a warm smile, or a listening ear. Her message was both simple and profound: love is shown through actions, not words.

Mother Teresa teaches us that humility is not thinking less of yourself, but of respecting and loving others. Kindness doesn't have to be big or dramatic; small acts can ripple outward in ways we may never see. And love... love is choosing to care for others in acts of selfless service every single day, even when it's inconvenient. Mother Teresa's life is a reminder that we each have the power to con- tribute to the HKL movement. Every gentle gesture, every moment of patience, every act of care can grow into some- thing far greater than ourselves.

ART THAT SPEAKS WHEN WORDS CANNOT

MALAYSIA

A Singapore-based artist Anit Kaur gifted this art piece during Malaysia's first HKL Local Conference in January 2026, as a reflection of humility, kind- ness and love.

For Anit Kaur, art serves as a vessel for this inward journey. In times when emotions could not be expressed in words, painting became a space to ob- serve, to process, and to recon- nect with herself. What once felt fixed or overwhelming gradual- ly softened, allowing clarity and understanding to emerge.

The painting depicts a woman standing in uncertainty, unable to see the path ahead. There is no clear direction, no resolution offered. Yet, within this mo- ment, there is a quiet stillness: a willingness to remain, to en- dure, and simply to be.

Through her collaborations with organizations supporting survivors of domestic abuse, Bhenji extends this inner prac- tice outward. Her art creates spaces where others are invited to pause, to reflect, and in time, to reconnect with the qualities they carry within themselves. To look within ourselves to re- connect to Humility, Kindness and Love through stillness and meditating on the stillness.

This subtle tension mirrors a deeper human experience. True transformation often begins not in what we do externally, but in the spaces where we allow ourselves to pause, to feel, and to turn inward. It is here, in the silence of reflection, that humil- ity, kindness, and love are dis- covered within.

There lies great strength and power in unity rather than division. Why divide ourselves into categories when we in true essence are One.

Each one of us is crafted by the same Creator through each of us shines the same light, this light from within unites us then how are we to say we are different from one another?

You and I are composed of the same elements (carbon, oxygen, hydrogen)

as the planets, the stars, the trees, the animals you and I are the universe itself given a body for a few moments so that we can experience this beautiful life through the eyes of love and not through energies that try to divide and rule.

You belong and you matter because you are essentially me and I am you, just given a different form different features, for a brief moment in eternity.

Whoever you see whatever you see is you:

the child laughing and playing on the playground, the homeless man begging, the wealthy greed-filled man, the woman giving birth to new life, the man waiting for his bus, the elderly grandma and grandpa sitting on the porch enjoying their evening, the birds singing their favorite song, the trees swaying with the wind, the water gently flowing and making music. You feel it don't you?

Do you feel the connection from within?

You and I are the same.

We are like droplets of water journeying back to the same ocean we came from. So tell me dear soul, how are we different, when we were never different to begin with?

Do not let the darkness continue to wage wars and inflict more pain and suffering on the consciousness. No matter what happens stay connected, stay united. Do not allow these categories to divide you from yourself or let your mind create false perceptions against others. Let your thoughts only gravitate towards oneness and love no matter who it is, because underneath the surface we each have an invaluable jewel of kindness and Love (hidden) waiting to be discovered and sometimes it takes a little more patience a little more determination to peel away the layers of what has shaped our mind, body, and soul for so long in order to get to the root of it all Unconditional Love.
