St Mary the the Blessed Virgin Parish Magazine September 2026
From the Reader’s Desk
The year is moving fast and we have now arrived at the beginning of September. This time of year is one of my favourites, back to school time in the past, a new year with new challenges, the beautiful colours of autumn with falling leaves and evenings drawing in. September is also the month of my birthday, a big one this year which I hope to share with many of you in church at the end of the month. As a child, I can remember warm Septembers with party games in the garden and walks on Shirley Hills and playing in the local parks
What a summer we have had this year, endless hot days, often too hot to do things we would usually do, but a treat to go out for the day not having to worry about warm jumpers and waterproofs. The lack of rain has had great consequences for our gardens but especially for farmers and food producers who may not harvest enough crops to feed their livestock or to deliver to our supermarkets. We pray for their livelihood and for our part in not wasting food that they provide.
At the end of September, the church will celebrate Harvest Festival, please bring tinned and packet goods to our service on 27th when we will collect all that has been donated and give it to The Vine Foodbank in New Addington. We give thanks for the work that they do in providing food for those in need in our community. There is a collection box in the church porch for donations that is cleared each week and taken up to support their work so when you are shopping, do consider picking up some extra items to add to the box when you come to church.
I know many people in our congregation have been out for days, maybe to the seaside or to a favourite park or attraction. Others have been farther afield to visit family or friends or flown to holiday resorts to enjoy a relaxing break from work. Whatever you have
