Addington / Croydon tower outing
Valentines Day! That's risky then, but eighteen ringers and friends set off on a lovely sunny but cold day for a trip to north Kent. Our winter outings tend to be short and low key with only three towers scheduled and a long pub lunch.
Our first tower was a delightful six at Chalk near Gravesend, where the ringing was good and varied. Three new bells were installed in 1998 and the 5th dated back to 1348. This was followed by the short trip to Shorne, a 9cwt six with a long draft and plain bearings. Much more challenging and a sense of achievement when correctly struck.
So, onto the Rose and Crown in Shorne where both the food and service were exceptional - especially the £I "Quiddich" pudding. Pub lunch was probably the highlight of the day for many.
Finally onto Cobham, where some of us had navigation problems. This was the heaviest six of the day at 13cwt and a pleasure to ring. They are quite old but rehung in 1994. A feature of Cobham is the attached almshouses which were originally a monastery but still in use and open to the public.
All three towers were ancient and in the flint and ragstone style - and all had projecting stair turrets, which seems to be a feature of this area. David Whitehead
A Mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.
The mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. She told them, If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake I can wait'
Kevin turned to his younger brother and said "Ryan, you be Jesus."
