Text of this page

Nelson Mandela is renowned as one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, not because of his wealth or status, but because of his humility and his choice of reconciliation over revenge.

Mandela was born in 1918 in a small village in South Africa. As a young man, he studied law and quickly became aware of the ra- cial injustice in his own country.

THE POWER OF HUMILITY the release of Mandela. After his release, South Africa held its first democratic election, where all people of all races were al- lowed to vote. As a result of this election, Mandela became the country's first black president. However, rather than being cru- el like the presidents before him and seeking revenge against those who had supported apart- heid, Mandela leaned toward humility rather than violence. He encouraged unity between racial groups and supported peace over division.

There was a system that denied the basic rights of black citizens and enforced racial segregation called apartheid. Mandela, who saw the wrong in this, joined the African National Congress (ANC) and began organizing resistance against these laws.

Due to his activism and protests, Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life in prison on Robben Island under harsh conditions. In this prison, many prisoners became bitter and cru- el over the years, but Mandela used this time to reflect and strengthen his determination to reach justice.

He once said, "I stand here be- fore you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people."

After 27 years behind bars, Mandela was released on Feb- ruary 11th, 1990, due to pres- sure on the South African gov- ernment by citizens demanding

him as, but as a simple man who was serving his country. He be- lieved becoming president was a collective struggle of South Africans rather than his own achievement. He listened to the needs of the people, respected others, and stepped down after one term. Instead of holding power he believed that being a leader was about serving the people rather than controlling them.

Mandela taught the world that strength is not shown through power or anger, but through hu- mility, kindness, and love. He proved that even in the face of anger, injustice, and suffering, a person can still choose com- passion and dignity. His legacy continues to influence people to stand for what is right and treat people with humility.

And to the reader, what can you do to help inspire others to practice HKL?
