From One Yoga Mat to a Park Full
"I didn't expect this many people to come!" was the hum- ble remark shared by Rohit, the Co-founder of Karmoksha Yoga. Rohit and Renu hosted an early morning yoga session in collaboration with HKL to cel- ebrate International Yoga Day and the Summer Solstice. They welcomed everyone with open arms at Unwin Park in Surrey, B.C. Although this was their SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA model, they felt something was still missing. They discovered that yoga filled that void with a sense of peace. When they first began sharing yoga, they only had one member. She was 55 years old. This International Yoga Day, that same member, who is now 64 years old, wore a Karmoksha Yoga T-shirt. This kind and loving gesture filled their hearts with overwhelming gratitude as it reminded them of their humble beginnings.
Before beginning the yoga ses- sion, an HKL volunteer shared a few words and guided the participants through the weekly challenge: to feel your dancing heart and thank it. This was fol- lowed by Rohit sharing some background on yoga, including first time holding something like this, people came all the way from neighbouring cities to join. Rohit shared that their vi- sion is for yoga to be not just an activity, but for the meditative state to become a lifestyle.
In 2018, Rohit and Renu found yoga when they were least ex- pecting it. From working cor- porate jobs as an engineer and a
the eight states of yoga, with the eighth state being samadhi (a deep meditative state). The participants spanned from young children to seniors. The yoga session included warm- up exercises, yoga poses, and breathing exercises. It was both relaxing and a good challenge. It was beautiful to bring every- one together regardless of age or experience because when the instructors challenged us, it was relieving for us all to laugh at ourselves as we tried. The at- mosphere felt very light-heart- ed. After the session, HKL volunteers shared goodie bags with all the participants. It was a beautiful experience for the community to gather and start off the day with a practice that brings us closer to ourselves.
