Nelson Mandela is renowned as one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, not because of his wealth or status, but because of his humility and his choice of reconciliation over revenge.
Mandela was born in 1918 in a small village in South Africa. As a young man, he studied law and quickly became aware of the ra- cial injustice in his own country.
THE POWER OF HUMILITY the release of Mandela. After his release, South Africa held its first democratic election, where all people of all races were al- lowed to vote. As a result of this election, Mandela became the country's first black president. However, rather than being cru- el like the presidents before him and seeking revenge against those who had supported apart- heid, Mandela leaned toward humility rather than violence. He encouraged unity between racial groups and supported peace over division.
There was a system that denied the basic rights of black citizens and enforced racial segregation called apartheid. Mandela, who saw the wrong in this, joined the African National Congress (ANC) and began organizing resistance against these laws.
Due to his activism and protests, Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life in prison on Robben Island under harsh conditions. In this prison, many prisoners became bitter and cru- el over the years, but Mandela used this time to reflect and strengthen his determination to reach justice.
He once said, "I stand here be- fore you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people."
After 27 years behind bars, Mandela was released on Feb- ruary 11th, 1990, due to pres- sure on the South African gov- ernment by citizens demanding

him as, but as a simple man who was serving his country. He be- lieved becoming president was a collective struggle of South Africans rather than his own achievement. He listened to the needs of the people, respected others, and stepped down after one term. Instead of holding power he believed that being a leader was about serving the people rather than controlling them.
Mandela taught the world that strength is not shown through power or anger, but through hu- mility, kindness, and love. He proved that even in the face of anger, injustice, and suffering, a person can still choose com- passion and dignity. His legacy continues to influence people to stand for what is right and treat people with humility.
And to the reader, what can you do to help inspire others to practice HKL?

One weekend, the HKL Calgary volunteers stepped into a place where humility, kindness, and love were already being lived every single day.
The team had gathered to help unbox groceries and distrib- ute meals at Guru Nanak Free Kitchen (GNFK) a communi- ty-led initiative that ensures no one is left hungry. Volunteers moved side by side, opening boxes, preparing food, and greeting people with warmth. What stood out most was the spirit behind the work.
While serving that day, HKL volunteers had the opportunity

THE WORK OF GURU NANAK FREE KITCHEN
What was the moment or ex- perience that inspired the cre- ation of Guru Nanak Free Kitchen, and how did that first act of seva (selfless service) grow into what it is today?
LOVE ALL FEED ALL
GNFK: Guru Nanak Free Kitchen began in 2017 in Regi- na, Saskatchewan, with a very humble start. It was simply two boxes of bananas, muffins, and coffee that were shared with vulnerable people in downtown Regina. Before serving, we of- fered Ardas (prayer), asking for blessings to serve humanity. That small act of seva carried a simple belief: no one should sleep hungry. Week after week, volunteers returned to the same spot every Sunday. What began as basic food distribution grad- ually grew into providing hot, nutritious meals prepared with care. Regardless of rain, snow, or sunshine, the service contin- ued without interruption.

From Service to Story: HKL Volunteers in Conversation
Over time, more people joined the effort, and the initiative expanded beyond Regina. What started as a small act of kindness slowly grew into a movement powered by community support

and faith.
HKL Volunteers: When you think about the long-term vi- sion, what does true "humanity in action" look like to you?
GNFK: Humanity in action means serving without condi- tions. It means creating spaces where dignity comes first and no one feels judged or questioned. At Guru Nanak Free Kitchen, our approach is simple: there is no paperwork, no bureaucracy, no barriers. Anyone who needs food is welcome. Anyone who wants to help is welcome. Our vision is to expand further into rural communities across Alber- ta and Saskatchewan, develop permanent kitchen facilities, and create mobile food units that can bring meals directly to those who need them most. We also hope to build partnerships with schools and shelters so we can support youth facing food insecurity. Ultimately, humanity in action means communities taking care of one another.
The Heart Behind the Work Beyond food distribution, what do you believe people are truly hungry for today?
GNFK: Food is the immediate need, but people are also hun- gry for dignity, connection, and compassion. When someone just about nourishment for the receives a meal here, it's not body. It's about being treated with respect and kindness. It's about knowing that someone cares enough to show up. That is why every meal is offered with warmth, a smile, and genu-
ine conversation.
ganization has also stepped in during times of crisis. When a major water pipe burst in North- west Calgary, GNFK mobilized quickly, distributing 32,000 bottles of water and truckloads of groceries to support affected residents. Moments like these show how compassion can re- spond swiftly when communi- ties stand together.
Challenges & Faith
What has been one of the most challenging moments in this journey?
GNFK: The COVID-19 pan- demic was one of the most diffi- cult periods. Many community spaces closed, and people were isolated. Yet, the need for food increased drastically. Despite A Message for the Next Gener- the challenges, Guru Nanak Free Kitchen continued serving meals every Sunday across Sas- katchewan, adapting to safety ation

what would it be?
GNFK: Service does not need to start with something big. It can begin with something as simple as sharing what you have. When people come to- gether with humility and com- passion, small acts grow into powerful movements that can uplift entire communities.

At a recent United Nations In- terfaith Youth Panel in Surrey, British Columbia, young in- dividuals from diverse back- grounds came together to share their perspectives on how faith shapes character. Although they came from different walks of life, their responses carried a sense of harmony. It sounded as if they were speaking from a shared human experience.
In 2022, Guru Nanak Free Kitch- en expanded to Calgary, begin- ning service at the downtown Drop-In Centre. Within a year, the effort was serving hundreds of people every Sunday.
What Guru Nanak Free Kitchen has created is more than a food program; it is humanity in action. With ev- ery meal shared, the values of Humility, Kindness, and Love nourish not only the body, but the spirit.
Today, GNFK serves over 2,500 people every week across:

On Sunday, 8th February, HKL England volunteers took part in the community day at St Joseph's Church in Wolver- hampton, sharing the message of HKL with members of the local community.
The event was a great success, attracting a diverse and wel- coming crowd. Throughout the day, volunteers had many meaningful conversations and enjoyed connecting with at- tendees who were curious to learn more about the HKL movement. The positive re- sponse from the community made the experience both en- couraging and rewarding for everyone involved.
A range of activities took place during the day, includ- ing a lunch organised by the church, face painting, and dancing, creating a lively and family-friendly atmosphere. It would be great to stay con- nected. I am planning to attend the conference in April, so I'm sure our paths will cross again then.

HKL MALAYSIA CONDUCTS FIRST
On the 7th of March 2026, HKL volunteers got together at a park in Petaling Jaya, Selangor for the first HKL Wellness Meetup in Malaysia. The program started off with some activities focused on body movement such as stretches, cardiovascular exercise and strength training.
The event moved onto sessions focused on meditation and well-being. Volunteers sat together, listened to a guided meditation and ended with some reflection questions related to realizing Humility, Kindness and Love within.
The HKL volunteers in Malaysia look forward to making this a weekly initiative and continue to encourage anyone and everyone to participate. The participants shared a collective appreciation for the session as it was held amongst nature and even sitting in silence together felt very calming and peaceful.
A participant from Jordan has committed to leading the body movement session during his stay in Malaysia.
DAILY HKL AFFIRMATION:
"WE ARE HUMILITY, WE ARE KINDNESS, WE ARE LOVE"
True transformation does not come from words alone. It comes from the practice of turning inward to connect with yourself. Commit to it for 7 days and notice the shift for yourself. This practice offers simple yet powerful ways to reconnect with the virtues of Humility, Kindness & Love.
With regular practice, it brings lasting clarity, peace, joy, contentment, and a deep sense of true success in life. If you are new, this is where we begin. If you have been with us, this is where we return, every day.

THE GARAGE IS A MESS, AND MY CAR JUST BROKE DOWN. WHAT ELSE COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG TODAY...
This week, every morning when we wake up, the first thing we are going to do is to sit and recognize that I am sitting in the presence of God.
Thank Him so profusely for keeping me alive during the night-by breathing into and out of me, by running my heart, kidneys, and zillions of inner functions.
I HAVE YOUR RESULTS...
AND I'M SORRY TO BE THE BARRIER OF BAD NEWS... BUT YOU ONLY HAVE A FEW MONTHS TO LIVE-
Remain fully conscious that He is listening to me; I'm sitting in His presence; I'm sitting within Him.
And then every morning we should be so full of joy that today I'm going to be even more humble, more kind, and more loving than yesterday.
Remain awake throughout the day. Every time we say any harsh words to anybody in a disapproving way or any act of unkindness and ego, we should stop and ask for forgiveness to God and to the soul of that person.
NO! THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING! I HAVE SO MANY THINGS I STILL NEED TO DO! I HAVEN'T EVEN GONE OUT AND EXPLORED THE WORLD YET! WHAT WILL I DO?! WHAT WILL WE TELL EVERYONE?! MY LIFE IS GONE LIKE THAT! JU THAT! JUST A FEW MONTHS IS NOTHING! TTING 40 AND. THIS-
