Autumn: Creation and Death Autumn dismounts her soft feather down, And dons her russet coloured gown. Carrying a sceptre and orb in her hands, She surveys the woods and the farmer’s land.
She has an important task to do, Now that Summer is finally through, Into the woods she makes her way, To finish her work by the end of the day.
Stepping through shady woodland glades, She changes the leaves into autumn shades Of gold and bronze and orange hue, Crimson and brown and yellow, too.
Walking on carpets of dead crunchy leaves, Fluttering down in the autumn breeze. She colours the sloes upon the blackthorn, And ripens the fields of waving gold corn.
Scampering squirrels at her bare feet, Hoping she’ll give them an autumn treat. She scatters the acorns on woodland floors, Which they gather up for their winter stores.
While hedgehogs dig for worms in the ground, Mice watch her pass by not making a sound. Dandelion clocks tell her the time of day, Blown by the wind, gently floating away.
Blackberries glisten in the morning dew, Burnished brown chestnuts with reddish hue. Spiders’ webs sparkle with dew drops hung, Like diamonds on necklaces delicately strung.
