THOMPSON REGIONAL AIRPORT AND AREASS CONTINUED
In addition to the development of the new airport, the Thompson Regional Airport is diversifying the aviation landscape. In February 2023, the Thompson Regional Airport Authority purchased Ford's Global Cold Weather Testing facility and assets located at the airport to develop a new winter weather testing campus. The facility includes a 19,000 ft2 heated shop, 3,400 ft2 cold soaking chamber, offices, and meeting space as well as secured parking and storage areas. The new facility branded "Area 55" is now a leading advanced cold weather research facility for year-round testing specializing in cold weather testing due to the nature of the climate in Thompson.
In addition to the testing opportunities, the new facility offers the advantage to their northern community and stakeholders to accommodate other needs such as a training/research centre, product demonstration or competition venue for short or long-term capacity.
With the ongoing construction and development of the new airport terminal and Area 55, the future of the Thompson Regional Airport shines with promise. These initiatives signify a commitment to innovation, growth, and sustainability, positioning the airport as a vital hub for both transportation and research in the region. The upgraded facilities will not only enhance connectivity and operational efficiency but also attract new opportunities for economic development, workforce development and collaboration. As Thompson Regional Airport continues to evolve and expand its capabilities, it is poised to play an even more significant role in driving progress and prosperity for Northern Manitoba.
The Communities Economic Development Fund (CEDF) has been instrumental in supporting the Thompson Regional Airport through various avenues, demonstrating its commitment to fostering regional growth and infrastructure development. Notably, CEDF has played a pivotal role in facilitating connections with funders, enabling the airport to secure crucial financial support for its redevelopment initiatives. Additionally, CEDF has been a supporter of the winter weather testing initiative since its inception in 2019, recognizing its potential to enhance the airport's capabilities and attract new opportunities for research and innovation. This collaborative approach aligns with the objectives outlined in the Look North Report, which emphasizes the organization's commitment to supporting long-term infrastructure plans that promote economic development and prosperity in the north. Through its strategic investments and partnerships, CEDF continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of the Thompson Regional Airport.
