Statement from Controller Malia M. Cohen on the Passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson

SACRAMENTO, CA - On Tuesday, Feb- ruary 17, Controller Malia M. Cohen issued a statement on the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson:

"I join millions across our nation in mourn- ing the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson who was a towering figure in the fight for civil rights, economic justice, and human dignity.

Reverend Jackson dedicated his life to ex- panding opportunity and demanding that our institutions live up to their highest ideals. From standing alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to leading the Rainbow PUSH Coali- tion, he never wavered in his belief that every person deserves a voice, a fair chance, and a seat at the table. His enduring call to 'Keep hope alive' challenged us not only to believe in change, but to do the work required to achieve it.

His leadership inspired generations of public servants, advocates, and community leaders including many of us who continue to work toward a more just and equitable society.

To his family, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life, I extend my deepest condolences. May we honor his legacy not only with words, but with action by continuing the work to build com- munities where opportunity is real, fairness is foundational, and hope is sustained for all."

Inland Empire Students Urged to Claim $275 Million in Available CalKIDS Scholarships Before FAFSA Deadline

INLAND EMPIRE, CA - As the March 2 priority financial aid dead- line approaches, Inland Empire high school seniors completing the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) are encouraged to check whether they have a CalKIDS Schol- arship that can help pay for college or career training.

In Inland Empire, more than $275 mil- lion in CalKIDS Scholarship funds are available to support students pursuing higher education. The scholarship is easy to claim and doesn't require essay submissions, recommendation letters, or a minimum GPA.

CalKIDS is the nation's largest child development account program, provid- ing scholarships of up to $1,500 for eli- gible California public school students. Funded by the State of California and administered by the ScholarShare In- vestment Board, chaired by State Trea- surer Fiona Ma, CPA, CalKIDS helps reduce financial barriers as students plan for college or career training.

"CalKIDS was created to support students at moments when financial decisions can feel overwhelming," said State Treasurer Fiona Ma, CPA. "Having scholarship support already in place can empower students and families to make confident financial choices as they plan for college or ca- reer training."

Statewide, more than 60% of public- school students in grades 2-12 are eli- gible to claim a CalKIDS Scholarship worth up to $1,500. Some college-age students may also have a CalKIDS Scholarship available. The scholarship can be used for qualified higher edu- cation expenses, including tuition and fees, books and supplies, and computer equipment.
