SAN BERNARDINO, CA―The San Ber- nardino City Unified School District (SB- CUSD) and Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. unveiled the Field of Dreams project before more than 600 students at Curtis Mid- dle School on Oct. 16, a transformative plan to renovate and expand a baseball field for chil- dren and families.

The announcement drew cheers from students and staff gathered in the school's multipurpose room as Supervisor Baca Jr. shared his vision

for improving recreational opportunities in San Bernardino. As a gesture of encourage- ment and community pride, every Curtis stu- dent received a custom Field of Dreams T-shirt from Supervisor Baca Jr. to commemorate the day. And in baseball tradition, Cracker Jack boxes were available as "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" played, while hundreds of students cheered.

"As a former State Assemblymember, I had the honor of authoring AB 1497, which made it possible for this land to become part of Curtis Middle School," said Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. "Today, as County Supervisor, I'm proud to see that vision come full circle. The Field of Dreams project is about more than new fields it's about giving our youth a place to grow, play, and dream big. When we invest in our schools, we invest in the next generation of leaders right here in San Bernardino." To continue, visit www.wssnews.com.

CTA Supports Proposition 50 to Safeguard Public Education and services, further erod- ing civil rights," says CTA President David Goldberg. "From freezing education funds to dismantling vital agencies and programs, various at- tacks jeopardize our students, families, and immigrant and LGBTQIA+ com- munities. We must defend our rights and resources."

Assuming Prop 50 passes, California will pick up five ad- ditional Democratic seats in Congress.

Assemblymember Dr. Corey Jackson emphasized the im- portance of this mea- sure in upholding Black representation and protecting voting rights. "This measure amplifies our voices and keeps federal and state powers account- able," he stressed. CTA Secretary-Trea- surer Erika Jones em- phasized the union's commitment: "Many

Republican represen- tatives have refused

Democratic Processes to meet with local teachers or have sup- ported cuts to schools and healthcare. We stand united in oppo- sition to these attacks on our communities and democracy."

"Donald Trump and Texas Republicans are making an un- precedented power grab to steal Con- gressional seats and rig the next election to hold onto power," says Governor New- som." Prop 50 puts our elections back on a level playing field, protects independent redistricting, and gives power to the people by letting vot- ers decide, not politi- cians."

Proposition 50 will authorize the tempo- rary use of new con- gressional district maps beginning in 2026 and ending in 2030, after which the independent Citizens Redistricting Com mission will resume districting responsi- bilities. County Has a Scholarship Waiting

San Bernardino, CA ing. For newborns with a commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive," said Jackie Thu-Huong Wong, Executive Director of First 5 California. "CalKIDS is a powerful way to show fami- lies that their child's future matters from the very beginning."

With August, Sep- tember, and October among the most com- mon birth months in California, thousands of families are be- coming newly eli- gible for a CalKIDS Scholarship. It's a timely opportunity for parents to take an easy first step that can grow into a lifelong advantage for their child's education.

San Bernardino County families wel- coming a new baby can also celebrate another milestone: their child's very first scholarship. Through the California Kids Investment and De- velopment Savings Program (CalKIDS), every child born in the state on or after July 1, 2022, automati- cally has a CalKIDS Scholarship Account waiting in their name including more than $5 million in scholarship funds set aside for children in San Bernardino County alone.

CalKIDS is the na- tion's largest chil- dren's development account program, de- signed to support col- lege and career trainand young children, the state invests up to $175 in a CalKIDS Scholarship Account:

$100 for being born in California (babies born July 1, 2023 or later; $25 for those born between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023)

$25 extra when parents claim the ac- count online

$50 extra for link- ing the account to a ScholarShare 529 College Savings Plan

That's up to $175 already invested in a child's future, long before applications, admissions essays, or financial aid forms come into play. "At First 5 Califor- nia, we recognize that supporting healthy development begins development, val- ues-based leadership training, and peer learning opportuni- ties, the organization empowers nonprofit professionals to ex- pand their knowl- edge, increase their funding, and lead with purpose.
