National Black Grads Celebration. This moment is more than an event.
It is a milestone, a testimony, and living proof of what can happen when a village refuses to give up on its children.
For fifteen years, National Black Grads has stood as a beacon of love, excellence, vision, and commitment for Black students across the Inland Empire. We have climbed mountains to get here. We have pressed through obstacles, stretched resources, faced uncertain times, and still, here we stand.
We are living in a world that carries real weight. Families are navigating economic uncertainty, employment challenges, homelessness, mental and physical health struggles, and the pressure of holding everything together in unstable times. Yet even in the face of it all, we remain resilient, bold, fearless, and full of joy.
That is what this celebration represents.
To every parent, family member, educator, mentor, donor, volunteer, partner, and supporter, thank you for being the village. Thank you for pouring in, standing in the gap, and helping carry this vision for fifteen years.
Every student honored here today is the answer to somebody's prayer. They are the fruit of sacrifice, the evidence of perseverance, and the living dream of ancestors who believed that one day we would not only survive, but shine.
Today, we celebrate more than graduation. We celebrate possibility, brilliance, and the power of a people who know how to build, protect, uplift, and love one another through every season.
At National Black Grads, this has always been more than a ceremony. It is a declaration. It is a movement. It is our way of saying that Black excellence is real, present, powerful, and worthy of being seen, honored, and lifted high.
To every graduate, we see you, we honor you, we believe in you, and we need you.
As we celebrate this milestone, may this room be filled with gratitude, joy, and expectation for all that is still possible.
Welcome to the movement. Welcome to the joy.
Welcome to the village.

"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members." - Coretta Scott King
The sacred Kente cloth has long been woven with power. Once reserved for West African royalty, each vibrant strand speaks of spirit, of purpose, of identity. Worn across the shoulders of today's graduates, it becomes more than fabric, it becomes a mantle.
To wear the sash is to honor those who came before. It is to say: "I remember." It is to carry forward the strength of generations who prayed, persevered, served, and made a way. The colors echo the wisdom of ancestors; they wrap students in calling, courage, and responsibility. For African American graduates, this is more than tradition, it is transformation. The Kente connects the soul to its roots, Africa to the Diaspora, the struggle of yesterday to the purpose of today. It is a quiet yet powerful declaration:
"I know who I am. I know whose I am."
Since the 17th century, Kente weaving, rooted in the cultures of the Akan, Ewe, and Asante peoples has been a sacred art form. Its patterns, like proverbs, carry layered meaning. With every thread, a value is preserved. With every ceremony, that meaning lives on.
When our graduates place the cloth over their shoulders, they become living testaments-evidence of resilience, self-determination, and the enduring power of community. They remind us that education is not only personal achievement, it is service, legacy, and collective advancement. This annual rite is not just symbolic. It is spiritual. And it calls us, the village, to witness and remember: This student does not stand alone. They walk in the footsteps of servants, scholars, visionaries, freedom fighters, and faithful builders of community.
To the Class of 2026, National Black Grads and your entire village celebrate you. May this Kente cloth remind you that you are wrapped in purpose, guided by spirit, and called to uplift others as you rise.
More than a hymn, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is a call to unity and survival-a sacred thread in the story of Black America. Written in 1900 by James Weldon Johnson and set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson, the song debuted in Jacksonville, Florida, sung by 500 Black schoolchildren. Its verses, steeped in hope and hardship, quickly became an anthem for generations. Adopted by the NAACP and echoed through the Civil Rights Movement, it gave voice to those denied liberty and uplifted spirits when freedom felt far away.
Today, its words still call us to rise to remember our pain, but never forget our power.
And just as the song speaks to our legacy, so does the raised fist-a bold symbol of Black resistance and resilience. From the Black Power movement to the frontlines of today's protests, the fist is more than a gesture. It is a declaration: We are here. We are strong. And we will not be silenced.
Together, the anthem and the fist remind us that Blackness is not just to be endured-it is to be celebrated, protected, and lifted. As our graduates walk across the stage, may they carry this anthem not just in voice, but in spirit-and continue to rise with the strength of all who came before them.

LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING
Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won

AT THE INTERSECTION OF SPOKEN WORD POETRY AND SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS, CULTURE IS STUDIED. TRUTH IS SPOKEN. COMMUNITIES ARE TRANSFORMED.
Anthony Blacksher, Ph.D., also known as Ant Black in the spoken word community, is a scholar, educator, community organizer, artist, and vinyl enthusiast with work spanning academia, performance, and grassroots initiatives.
At San Bernardino Valley College, he chairs Sociology and Ethnic Studies and is part of the Puente Program's training team, support- ing community college educators across California and Texas. He helped launch SBVC's annual poetry reading honoring activist John Trudell.
Dr. Blacksher earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from Claremont Graduate University, focusing on spoken word and performance poetry, and a master's in Sociological Practice from Cal State San Marcos, where he researched church communities as advocates for racial health equity.
His academic interests include ethnic studies, Hip Hop studies, crime and deviance, and digital humanities. He created SocioPoetix, an archive blending spoken word poetry and sociological analysis.
His co-authored works have appeared in the Cambridge Companion to 21st Century American Poetry, the Journal of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, and Applied Theatre and Racial Justice.
As a community organizer and artist, he co-founded Collective Purpose and the open-mic series Elevated, helping bring San Diego's spoken word scene to national attention. He led the San Diego Poetry Slam team in five national competitions, including a fourth- place finish in 2013. Dr. Blacksher is founder and co-host of Word 66 in San Bernardino and performs with bkSoul. He has appeared on TVOne's Verses & Flow, performed with Rudy Francisco at a San Diego FC match, and serves as publisher of the San Diego Poetry An- nual and Vice President of the San Diego Entertainment + Arts Guild. Dr. Blacksher is a husband, father, and devoted community member. Outside of work, he enjoys searching for records and listening to music with strong funk, groove, and bass lines. word66.com | SocioPoetix.org
Dr. Keith Hosea is a transformational leader, educator, and community pioneer whose life's work has expanded access, opportunity, and belief for students and families who have historically been underserved. For more than two de- cades, he has dedicated his career to empowering foster youth, transition-age youth, and first-generation students to recognize their full potential and step confidently into their future.
As the Founder and President/CEO of Telios Training Solutions, Dr. Hosea has built one of California's most respected

Ph.D., MBA, MHROD youth development and workforce read- iness organizations, delivering culturally responsive programming in life skills, leadership development, social-emo- tional learning, and independent living preparation. His work has supported thousands of young people navigating foster care, higher education, and early career pathways, often serving as a critical bridge between survival and self-determination.
Through his roles at San Bernardino Valley College, Youth Action Project, and California Youth Connection, Dr. Hosea has helped students not only access college, but remain there supported, prepared, and empowered. His leadership continues to strengthen partnerships across education and community sys- tems, ensuring students receive both the resources and relationships needed to succeed.
Dr. Keith Hosea embodies the spirit of this recognition-building pathways where none existed and helping students believe that higher education, leadership, and generational success are not only possible, but inevitable.
Even through personal battles and physical challenges, he has never stepped away from his calling, continuing to show up, pour in, and lead with unwavering purpose. His life is a testament that true impact is not measured by what we face, but by how we rise, and who we bring with us when we do."

A proud native of San Bernardino, California, Heather Morris is a transfor- mational educator, mentor, and college access advocate whose work continues to shift the trajectory of students and families across the Inland Empire. A product of San Bernardino City and Rialto

Heather MORRIS ing at Grand Canyon University. Since 2015, Ms. Morris has served the San Bernardino City Unified School District across North Park Elementary, Shan- din Hills Middle School, and Cajon High School, where she has spent the past five years advancing equity and target- ed student achievement. Her impact extends beyond the classroom through her leadership in community-based initiatives, including The Swans Club, and as founder of the Inland Empire's first majorette team, The Dazzling Divas, while also coaching a step team that builds confidence, discipline, and pride in young people.
A relentless advocate for marginalized students, Ms. Morris has expanded college and career pathways with a focused commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), ensuring students are not only exposed to opportunity, but equipped to pursue it with confidence and clarity. Heather Morris embodies the spirit of this recognition-uplifting students to see themselves as scholars, leaders, and architects of their own future.
Too often, leaders like her do the work without the spotlight, quietly shaping lives, holding standards, and carrying others forward. Today, we name it, we honor it, and we lift her up, because the world deserves to see the brilliance that our students have always known."

BECAUSE EVERY DREAM DESERVES A SOLID FOUNDATION.
WE ARE 15th Annual IE Black Graduate Recognition Ceremony
PARENT GUARDIANS
OF THE Village
Asha Ayanna Compton-Sendrey is a village guardian with a victory story rooted in faith, resilience, and purpose. Through loss, grief, and life's challenges, she reminds others to see their own beauty, talent, and potential. Her message encourages prayer, strategy, and self-belief, declaring that we conquer everything with ease when we use strategies.
I am a single working parent actively involved in my daughter's education and activities. When she resisted going to school, I recognized the gaps affecting students of color. Alongside two other mothers, I took action to help create a supportive space for these students and their families.
If not me then who? If not now, then when? Our students deserve the best advocate to stand in the gap. It is my responsibility and indeed my pleasure to ensure that our students are seen, heard, and respected; no matter the age, socioeconmoic status or academic positioning. Our students are Royalty and children of the Most High King and they will be acknowledged and respected as such on my watch; and any and every where my influence abounds.
"I do this work to create spaces where Black girls are seen, valued, and can see themselves fully. It's about building on the power they already carry, affirming identity, and nurturing confidence so they can thrive unapologetically in every part of their lives."
I do this work because growing up I didn't have many positive Black role models. Many people around me were in the streets influencing the next generation. I believe if we teach youth integrity, self-respect, and perseverance in schools, they can grow into leaders and change the world.
Education is the flame that lights our path forward, the key that unlocks hidden doors, and the root that nourishes a stronger tomorrow. It gives our children the courage to rise, the wisdom to lead, and the power to transform struggle into legacy.
THE ARE THE 15th Annual IE Black Graduate Recognition Ceremony
As a Dream Cultivator, I help students recognize, develop, and lead with their gifts. With 25+ years in K-12 education and motivational speaking, I use restorative practices to build confidence and critical thinking. As a three-year AAPAC President and national advocate, I partner with families and communities to empower Black students with cultural pride
"I do this work to create spaces where Black girls are seen, valued, and can see themselves fully. It's about building on the power they already carry, affirming identity, and nurturing confidence so they can thrive unapologetically in every part of their lives."
I believe Black women are the heartbeat of the village. When we intentionally embrace, affirm, and uplift one another, we set the temperature for our families and communities. Our unity creates warmth, resilience, and healing-proving that when Black women stand together, the entire village is ACTIVE!!
I support our students because I understand the power of having someone believe in you. Our youth deserve guidance, encouragement, access to opportunities, and most of all LOVE. Being part of their journey means helping them realize their worth, helping them to walk in confidence, and know that they are capable of being great and achieving their goals.
I enjoy creating and leading AAPAC's at my kids schools. They get to see me encouraging our community and follow in my footsteps by also participating in clubs and groups in their school settings that foster black excellence. I love creating a community for black families to feel seen and heard, while learning to showcase black excellence themselves!

PARENT GUARDIANS OF THE Village
Being of service to the youth in my community is something that was instilled in me very early in life. My commitment to seeing our youth thrive, and not just survive, is what continues to guide me and drives me to show up for them, just as so many did for me.
Leads with discipline, faith, integrity, and service. As a veteran, father, entrepreneur, and community advocate, he uses his gifts to open doors for others. His example reminds young people to dream boldly, work strategically, honor family, and build a legacy rooted in purpose, excellence, and community impact.
As a mother, I am deeply committed to ensuring that every child's voice is heard and that they have access to every available opportunity. When students feel supported and safe, they can reach their full potential. I will always be their biggest supporter, working to ensure they are seen, valued, and encouraged. Best regards, De Anna Kearse
Head Football Coach, teacher at Riverside Polytechnic High School
After retirement from the NFL, I decided to pursue a career in education and coaching in hopes to be a positive influence on future generations. I am rewarded each day by seeing the growth and development taking place in the lives of my students.
I support the students by trying to create a welcoming and safe environment so that all students feel seen, respected and supported. By partnering with educators, I try to uplift and motivate them-even when they're struggling-so they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally! Every student matters. It truly takes a VILLAGE!
