Page 2A long time ago the gods had to sacrifice themselves in a fire so the sun could move. But there was one god who did not want to do it his name was Xólotl and he had a dog head. He was also the twin brother of Quetzalcoatl.
Page 3Xolotl was scared of dying so he ran away. He knew someone would come looking for him, but he had a power that could help him hide. He could change into different things.
Page 4First he turned into a corn plant with two stems. He hoped nobody would notice him there. But he could not stay hidden so he tried again and turned into a maguey plant. That did not save him either.
Page 5He still did not want to give up finally he reached the canals of Xochimilco and jumped into the water. This time he turned into an axolotl hiding underwater Instead of land.
Page 6Even after all those change, Xólotl was caught. But this story did not end completely he left axolotl in the waters of Xochimilco with the ability to grow back parts of its body . The animal became a reminder of the god who tried to escape.
