  • Page 2On Cerro Xilotepec, in the town of San Gregorio Atlapulco, Xochimilco, there are two ancient carved stone monuments that are very important to the history of Xochimilco. Not many people know about them because it is difficult to get to the place.
  • Page 3In this part of Xochimilco, many old stories and traditions have been forgotten. But the carvings represent Cihuateteo and Xipe Totec. However, local people know them as “La Malinche” and “Juan the Drummer” or “El Tamborilero”.
  • Page 4When you walk up the hill, the first big rock you see is “Cihuateteo”. It represents a woman who is about to give birth. Her hands are on her belly. This stone monument fell and is almost upside down. It was probably part of the other stone monument located close by.
  • Page 5Then, you can see the other pre- Hispanic carving. It represents Xipe Totec. He was a god who represented rebirth and renewal. You can still see some red paint on the stone. The monument was probably painted mostly red.
  • Page 6According to the story, Cihuateteo was worshipped in the hills of Xochimilco. However, some people believe that the Mexicas introduced the worship of Xipe Totec to the area. This is why the female figure was probably knocked down.
